■ Chair and floor
Japanese people discovered the floor, but failed to come up with a chair. They take off their shoes at the entrance of a house and walk on the floor barefooted. In the way that westerners treated chairs and beds, Japanese people saw the floor as a type of furniture. Therefore, when they put down cushions on the floor, the room became a living room, and once they laid out a sleeping mattress, the room became a bedroom. Westerners do not take their shoes off at the entrance. To them the interior of a house was not much different from the external world full of danger. Because they kept their shoes on even inside a building, they saw architecture in a completely different light as the Japanese people.
